Faking referrers to spam logs

I just saw some really awkward entries in my web logs.

A lot of entries that had bit.ly referrers. All these bit.ly entries pointed to more or less suspicious web sites. (And I deeply think that using URL shorteners is mostly a damn bad habit)

Since I’m 100% sure that bit.ly won’t link here or to any other blog like this it can only be people/bots that makes requests to these sites faking the referrer heading in the request.

Quite a clever trick I must say even if the target audience is somewhat limited. But then again the said audience is most likely is very well defined. (A lot of the links where to hosting companies 🙂 ) Further more the audience is most likely a lot larger today than it used to be, thanks to services such as Google Analytics.
